# Why a request returns 404

> What a 404 not_found response means and how to improve match rates.

A `404` response with `not_found` means PDL found no record matching your request. **It isn't a system error, and PDL doesn't bill credits for it\*.**

**Exception:** PDL doesn't bill credits for `404` responses, except on the [Person Identify API](https://docs.peopledatalabs.com/docs/person-identify-api), which bills one credit per request whether or not it finds a match.

## Improve your chances of a match

### Enrichment and Identify APIs

* **Add identifiers.** Send more of what you know, such as name, company, location, email, or profile URL. More inputs give the matching model more to work with.
* **Remove blank parameters.** Send only fields that have values.
* **Lower `min_likelihood` (Enrichment APIs only).** A high threshold returns only strong matches and may return none. ### Search APIs

* **Broaden your query.** Remove filters one at a time to find which one excludes every result.
