# Fix 429 rate limit errors

> What a 429 rate_limit_error means and how to stay within your rate limit.

A `429` response with `rate_limit_error` means you sent more requests than your API key's rate limit allows in the current window.

## How PDL rate limits work

* Limits apply per API key and per endpoint.
* PDL uses a fixed-window strategy. With a limit of `100` requests per minute, you can send all `100` at any point in the 60-second window.
* Once `x-ratelimit-remaining` reaches zero, requests return `429` until the window resets.

## Resolve the error

1. Read the `x-ratelimit-reset` header to see when the window resets, in UTC.
2. Pause requests until that time, then retry.
3. Track `x-ratelimit-remaining` and slow down before it reaches zero.

For bulk work, use the [Bulk Enrichment API](https://docs.peopledatalabs.com/docs/bulk-enrichment-api.md) to send up to 100 records in one request.

## Increase your limit

Enterprise customers can contact their Customer Success Manager to raise rate limits. For details on limit headers, see [Usage limits](https://docs.peopledatalabs.com/docs/usage-limits.md).
